Spellcasting 301: Spring Break

Legend Entertainment Company, 1992

The third and the final chapter in the Spellcasting series, Spring Breaks brings back Ernie Eaglebeak and this time Ernie has to save the honor of his fraternity. The game is set in Fort Naughtytail, where Ernie has to comp with his fraternity friends and of course, a rival. It features numerous enjoyable puzzles with multiple solutions and several optional puzzles that are both fun and unique, numerous beach sporty events, and gorgeous women!

Spring Break combines excellent graphics and music with brilliant humor to create a truly entertaining game. Our only criticism is that the plot, which develops well in the beginning, seems to stumble about halfway through the game and never quite manages to recover.  However, there is an excellent plot twist to be found near the end that is quite delightful. All the fans of the series must play this last outing.

Spellcasting 201: The Sorcerer's Appliance

Legend Entertainment Company, 1991

This sequel to Spellcasting 101 vastly improves upon the plot, making it more substantial and challenging than the first. Additionally, it covers important events from the previous game and sets the stage for the next. In this game, you return as Ernie Eaglebeak to Sorcerer University for your sophomore year. But this time the unlikely hero is involved in this hilarious romp through a series of room, turrets, and tunnels of Sorcerer University. Cast spells, solve mind-breaking puzzles and deal with stupendous women while keeping your mind focused on the ordeal of every Sorcerer University sophomore. The graphics and the sound are quite good, as is the game''s marvelous sense of humor. This one is worth playing by all fans of graphical interactive fiction.

Spellcasting 101: Sorcerers Get All the Girls

Legend Entertainment Company, 1990

Steve Meretzky's first game since Infocom's demise, this Legend title plays more like a choose-your-path novel than it does a standard adventure. Play as Ernie Eaglebeak, a Sorcerer University's apprentice wizard who wants to be a Sorcerer so he can wave his wand in front of beautiful girls only to impress them and watch them swoon. Sorcerer University offers everything to fresh wizard-in-training but, let us see if you can help Ernie avail these offerings. The game does have graphics, but they can be toggled off and on with a keystroke, if desired. The game has a no-typing interface with all text displayed and the dialogue is a marvelous example of Meretzky's humor and writing talent. The game can be played in one of two modes: Naughty or nice!  Fans of Steve Meretzky's interactive fiction should not miss this title.
